1963. With Dr Lucien Blake now missing, presumed dead, Jean Blake has been left behind and bereaved in a changing Ballarat, and a changing world. In the aftermath of the assassination of President Kennedy, chief superintendent Matthew Lawson finds himself confronted with not one but two grisly murders, and no obvious link. Jean may lack Lucien's forensic skills, not to mention his official role at the police station, but she is determined to prove to Matthew that she more than makes up for it in other ways. No one knows this town better than her.
