Series 41: Episode 2

At last Yvonne and Julian at back in the studio after filming from home for months due to the worldwide pandemic.\n\nErika Levi looks into the rising number of hate crime incidents towards East and Southeast Asian groups and how it can be reported and stopped. Erika speaks with Dr Huang, a sociology researcher from the University of Manchester, about why this is happening. Erika also learns, through first-hand reports, that the deaf community is not exempt.\n\nIn the ‘studio’, David Buxton and Jemina Napier share more details about the recent news that the government’s new Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill will allow sign language interpreters to be the 13th person in the jury room and attend the entire court case, so that deaf people can follow the proceedings and discussions. David and Jemina share with Yvonne how they campaigned for this to happen and how having a deaf member of jury will be beneficial for the court.\n\nYvonne takes a break from her kitchen to allow Ruaridh Lever-Hogg to take over the lifestyle strand. Ruaridh, a Scottish artist, gives us a masterclass on how to create a still-life drawing from scratch. You never know- his tips might turn you into the next Van Gogh!\n\nFinally, Stephen Illiffe- a deaf photographer- is back in his studio to create new additions to his exhibition, Deaf Mosaic. He has invited Nadia Nadarajah to join him to find out the story behind the exhibition.
