In this powerful episode of Hospital, the lockdown ‘baby boom’ has caused births nationally to rise by 11%, meaning Coventry’s University Hospital’s maternity unit is busier than ever. In addition to delivering over 5,500 babies per year, the unit boasts a specialist Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research, one of only four in the UK. The network of research centres looks for the causes of miscarriage and stillbirth and pioneers tests and treatments to find solutions. \n\nMiscarriage is the most common pregnancy complication with an estimated one in four women experiencing at least one miscarriage during their reproductive lifetime – around a quarter of a million in the UK each year. Current NHS guidelines mean that women must have three consecutive miscarriages before there is any investigation to find out if there is an underlying cause. No known cause is currently found in around half of all miscarriages. \n\nWorld-leading consultant obstetrician Professor Siobhan Quenby is determined to change this. She has over twenty years’ experience in recurrent miscarriage, treating women with high-risk pregnancies. Her goal is to keep more babies growing safely in the womb to prevent an early delivery or stillbirth.
