It’s estimated that as many as 250 million sharks are taken from the world’s oceans every single year. Around 73 million of those are taken purely for their fins which are used in shark fin soup, with the rest of the body wasted. This fishing is causing the possibility of extinction for sharks - so, what can we do?\n\nFirst of all, learn about the fish you eat. Fish such as tuna and swordfish are caught with a very high bycatch of shark, which means sharks are caught accidentally when fishing for species. Look for sustainably caught fis, and if in doubt stay clear of it. Be aware of the things that are sold in your local fish and chip shop, as often things that are labelled as huss or rock salmon could actually be shark.\n\nAnd learn to love sharks! Having people understand that sharks are not the menacing, man-eating monsters they are made out to be is so important. Perhaps dream of diving with sharks yourself one day. With our help, sharks can survive into the future.
